PRIEURE LICHINE 2014

CHATEAU PRIEURE LICHINE 2014
MARGAUX 4EME CRU
Wine critics & Tasting Notes

  • This is a fragrant and very attractive mid-weight wine with plenty of ripe fruit to balance the full, dry tannins, which give it some real power on the  finish.Drink or hold.93/100 James Suckling, JamesSuckling.com, February 2017
  • Tasted blind. Sweet – much sweeter than Alter Ego – and a little bit confected but made to be liked.Drink 2023-2037 16.5+ Jancis Robinson MW, JancisRobinson.com, February 2018
  • From the southern part of Margaux, the 2014 Château Prieure Lichine is little gem well worth seeking out. Offering lots of classic black cherry fruit, tobacco, herbs, and damp earth, it’s medium to full-bodied, impeccably balanced, and has moderate, chalky tannins on the finish. Like most 2014s, it’s already drinking nicely, yet is going to keep for 15 years or so. Tasted twice. 2018 - 2033 90/100 Jeb Dunnuck, JebDunnuck.com, November 2017
  • On the herbal side, with distinct bay and savory notes leading the way, followed by lightly steeped red currant and damson plum notes. Shows a good streak of black tea through the finish, where a cedar thread appears. Best from 2018 through 2024. 15,000 cases made. 88/100 James Molesworth, WineSpectator.com, February 2017
  • The 2014 Prieure-Lichine has a reserved, slightly tertiary/gravel-tinged bouquet that takes time to develop the fruit behind it. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, a gentle grip in the mouth, but attenuating slightly towards the finish that just needs to develop a little more frisson. Probably best suited for short-term drinking rather than long-term, but you never know. Drink Date 2019-2030 89/100  Neal Martin, Wine Advocate (Interim En), April 2017
  • The Château Prieuré-Lichine 2014 has a rather standoffish nose at first, but with a few swirls of the glass it opens up to reveal blackcurrant, raspberry and cassis scents with a light estuary influence just underneath (perhaps a whiff from the Gironde?) The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, lighter in style than other Margaux, but elegant and focused, the finish very harmonious with assiduously integrated new oak. Very fine. Tasted twice with consistent notes. Drink: 2018 - 2035. 90/92 Neal Martin, Wine Advocate (218), April 2015.

4th Grand Cru Classé in 1855, Château Prieuré-Lichine presents all the character of the superb Margaux appellation.
Château du Prieuré de Cantenac became Château Prieuré-Lichine when it was bought by the charismatic Alexis Lichine, the "Pope of Wine" in 1951. After his death in 1989, his son Sacha took over the reins of the estate until 1999, when the property became part of the Ballande group.
The philosophy of Château Prieuré-Lichine is focused on excellence in the production of great wines that reveal all the expression and diversity of the great terroirs of Margaux, an emblematic appellation located on Bordeaux’s Left Bank.
The vintage

A mild and rainy winter gave way to a particularly wet spring, putting great pressure on the vineyard’s health. The dry conditions in June brought about an even flowering. The summer saw a cool and wet August, which slowed down veraison and increased the pressure on the vineyard. From September onwards a dry and mild spell set in, which was ideal for ripening. The grapes harvested were of a great quality.
